1 Introduction to First Aid
neglect – When the basic provisions for life are not provided for. negligence – If a first aider does something knowingly and/or purposely against the patient’s interest. olfactory distortion – An increased sensitivity to recognizing odors. pocket mask and shield – A barrier device to prevent cross contamination between the patient and first aider during artificial respiration. post-traumatic stress – A condition that may develop after a person has experienced a psychologically distressing event such as a critical incident. tunnel effect – A condition that causes a person to focus on one thing to the exclusion of all others.
delayed stress – After the event the first aider may be left with nervous and excited energy that may continue to build and cause distraction, abuse, or any combination thereof. gloves – A barrier device to protect the first aider from blood or bodily fluids. harm – Physical abuse (including sexual abuse), psychological abuse, financial abuse or any combination thereof. implied consent – The idea that a seriously injured or ill person who was unable to ask for help would still want to be helped. Minors (children less than 18 years old) can give consent or implied consent in the absence of a parent or guardian. nausea – An uncomfortable feeling in the stomach that can lead to vomiting.
