Vital Vocabulary emergency move – Used to describe a patient move that is done to remove the patient or first aider from imminent danger or to reposition a patient for assessment of injuries and treatment of life threats. stair chair – A special chair designed to transport a patient down stairs. Equipped with handholds for bearers and straps to secure the patient, a stair chair is specially constructed to be strong and light weight. stretcher – A device used to transport an injured or ill patient who is unable to walk. rigid – A hard stretcher, usually constructed from metal. A basket stretcher is a rigid stretcher. semi-rigid stretcher – A fabric stretcher that has a rigid frame. soft stretcher – A fabric stretcher with no frame.

• Use a third person below to steady and guide the second person. • For longer distances, the second rescuer should separate the legs of the victim and back into the chair on the command of the person at the head, smoothly lifting the chair using leg muscles and keeping his or her back straight.
