Chair Carry A chair carry is a good method to transport a patient down stairs or through narrow passages and over uneven ground. Special pieces of equipment, called ‘stair chairs’ are made for this purpose. A chair carry is very difficult to do safely without training and practice. A chair may be improvised for this purpose but it must be sturdy. Do not use aluminum beach chairs, resin patio chairs, lightweight folding chairs, or swivel chairs.
Using a Chair to Transport a Patient • Pick the patient up and place them or have them sit in a chair. • Secure the patient to the chair at the chest and waist with a broad bandage, belt, or similar. Consider securing the legs. • The person at the head grasps the chair from the sides of the back, palms in. • The person at the head then tilts the chair back onto its rear legs. • For stairwells, the second person should face in and grasp the chair legs.
