11 Accident Prevention
Hazardous Material and Toxic Substances In the home, ensure that medications, cleaning products, gardening products, and other potentially harmful items are properly stored. Proper storage includes being in the original or a clearly marked container. The container should be sealed. If there are children in the house, store these items in a location where they are not assessable, such as a locked cabinet. In the workplace, the law requires that all employees receive training for any hazardous materials they may come in contact with on the job. This includes the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, or WHMIS. This system includes training in recognition and safety. It also includes the guidelines for properly labeling these materials, both from the manufacturer and the employer. Part of this labeling includes the Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) for the product which includes information on the risks of the product. It also contains first aid instructions.
Infectious Disease(s) Infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi; the diseases can be spread, directly or indirectly, from one person to another. Zoonotic diseases are infectious diseases of animals that can cause disease when transmitted to humans. Washing your hands regularily and getting vaccinated is the best prevention for infectious disease. Slip, Trip and Fall Hazards These accidents are among the most common and are for the most part completely avoidable. Use proper footwear for the conditions, watch your footing, and immediately correct any potential hazards you see. Choking Keep small objects and plastic bags away from infants and small children. Teach children to take small bites when eating and to thoroughly chew their food.
