11 Accident Prevention

Environmental hazards Dress appropriately for the weather. Eat and stay well hydrated to give your body the energy it needs to adapt to different conditions. Modify your exertion level to suit the temperature and rest as needed. Fire Hazards Overloaded plugs and extension cords, improperly stored materials such as paint or papers, or allowing children access to lighters and matches all increase the risk of a fire. All homes and workplaces should have a plan in case of a fire. Smoke detectors, safe egress routes, fire fighting equipment, and designated meeting areas should be known by all members of the family or workplace.

Drowning Wear appropriate safety gear when working and playing around or in water. Use the buddy system to watch over a friend or coworker. Never leave children unattended when swimming or around any body of water. Education Studies prove that people with appropriate training have fewer accidents. Prevention includes learning about potential risks, receiving training for different types of activities, and becoming an advocate for safety. Learning about potential risks and what to do can include taking Premergency training courses, such as first aid, WHMIS or any number of our online health and safety courses that Premergency provides. Once you have the knowledge and training, plan to keep your skills up with practice and refresher training.
