contact burn – Occurs when a person touches something hot. contusion (bruise) – A closed wound, usually caused by blunt trauma. This damage causes bleeding into the surrounding tissue causing discolouration and swelling. cornea – The transparent tissue at the front of the eye. cranium – The skull. critical incident – These occurrences may include mass casualty incidents, serious injury, or traumatic death, and/or injured and ill children. crush injury – When a part of the patient’s body is crushed under a heavy object. cyanosis – A bluish skin colour showing a lack of oxygen in the blood.
deformities – Displaced joints and broken bones that you can see or feel. delayed stress – After the event, when things have calmed down, the first aider may be left with nervous and excited energy that may continue to build and cause distraction. depth – A measurement that determines how much effort the patient is making to breathe. Are breaths normal, shallow, or deep? dermis – The lower layers of skin. diabetes – A condition when a patient’s body has either a problem with the production of insulin or a problem with how the body’s cells use the insulin. diffusion – The transfer process of oxygen and metabolic waste (CO2) from the body’s cells.
