dislocation – A disruption of a joint where the bone ends are no longer in contact. Supporting ligaments are often torn, which allows for complete separation of the joint. documentation – The patient report in the first aid process. DOTS – A mnemonic used to remember things to search for during a rapid body survey including deformities, open wounds, tenderness, and/or swelling. dressing – Used directly on a wound to control bleeding, absorb blood, and cover and protect a wound. drug – a drug is any substance, including alcohol, that causes an effect in the body. ecchymosis (raccoon eyes) – Bruising around the eyes, which may be a sign of head injury.
elastic bandage – Used to support an injury or to provide even pressure on a dressing to control bleeding. electrical burn – Occurs when a patient comes in contact with either high or low voltage electricity. elevation – Raise the injury slightly higher than the heart to decrease swelling. embedded object – An object that is stuck into a wound. epidermis – The top layers of skin. external bleeding – The loss of blood outside of the body.
