PREmergency Scene Management (PSM) – A system of five steps that provide a logical approach for evaluation and care of a patient. pulmonary edema – The passage of fluid from the arteries into the lungs due to back pressure within the circulatory system. pulse – The pressure wave felt in a artery each time the heart beats. puncture wound – Caused by objects that penetrate the skin. R.I.C.E. – A mnemonic to remember how to treat soft tissue injuries: rest, ice, compression, elevation. R.I.S.E. – A mnemonic used to remember how to treat muscle, bone, and joint injuries: rest, ice, splint, elevation.

radiation burn – Caused by energy radiating from a source that can damage the skin and eyes. rapid body survey – A quick (less than 60 seconds) scan and physical check of the patient for deadly bleeding and obvious injury. reassessment – A step performed at regular intervals during the assessment process. Its purpose is to identify and treat changes in the patient’s condition. respiration – The process of breathing. One inhalation and one exhalation equal a single respiration. responsiveness – The way a patient responds to external stimuli including verbal and physical stimuli. roller bandage – A cloth bandage available in many widths and thicknesses that is used to secure a dressing in place. Ends can be tied or secured with adhesive tape.
