patent airway – An open airway that does not impede breathing. penetrating chest wound – When a puncture injury penetrates into the chest cavity. perfusion – The circulation of oxygen-rich blood to the tissues of the body and the removal of metabolic waste (CO2). placenta – An organ that develops inside the uterus with the fetus during pregnancy. The placenta supplies blood with nutrients and oxygen to the fetus from the mother. pneumothorax – When air enters through a wound and into the chest cavity during inhalation. pocket mask and shield – A barrier device to prevent cross contamination between the patient and first aider during artificial respiration
poison or toxin – Any substance that causes harm when absorbed by the body. post-traumatic stress – A condition that may develop after a person has experienced a psychologically dis- tressing event such as a critical incident. postictal state – The recovery period after a seizure. It generally lasts from 5 to 30 minutes, but sometimes can be longer. pressure dressings – A sterile, thick, and highly absorbent dressing. Most often packaged with a cloth or elastic bandage attached. primary assessment – A step in PSM that identifies and treats life threats to the patient. primary blast – The direct effect of a pressure wave on the body.
