signs – Objective conditions of a patient that can be seen, heard, felt, or smelled by you or others. sling – Used to support the lower arm and hand if wounded. Slings can also be used for bone or joint injuries. spacer device / aero(sol) chamber – An extension chamber used with a metered dose inhaler. splint – A device used to immobilize an injury. sprain – An injury to the ligaments, tendons, and capsule of the joint. After the injury, the joint usually returns to its original position, so visual signs of the injury may be minimal. stair chair – A special chair designed to transport a patient down stairs. Equipped with hand holds for bearers and straps to secure the patient, a stair chair is specially constructed to be strong and light weight.

status epilepticus – Seizures that occur every few minutes without the patient regaining consciousness or a seizure that lasts more than 30 minutes. strain – The tearing or stretching of muscle tissue that may cause pain, swelling, and/or bruising. Typically, no injury to ligaments or tendons will occur. steam burn – Can create a scald burn. Minor steam burns are common in cooking. Steam (any hot gas) can cause severe airway burns. stretcher – A device used to transport an injured or ill patient that is unable to walk. stroke – Permanent damage to the brain when it is cut off from the flow of oxygenated blood. subluxation – A partial dislocation where the disruption of the joint is not complete.
