superficial burn (1st degree) – Affects only the top layers of the skin (the epidermis). symptoms – Things only be felt by the patient and described to the first aider. tenderness – Soreness or pain that the patient feels. tension pneumothorax – When air displaces and crushes the lungs and heart, which may cause death. tertiary injury – When a patient’s body is thrown by the explosion and strikes objects such as trees, cars, buildings, or the ground. tetanus – An infection that may occur when open wounds have been exposed to dirt, dust, or animal feces. thermal burn – Is caused by heat, as opposed to chemicals, electricity, or radiation.

tonic-clonic seizure – A type of seizure in which the patient experiences periods of rigidity and relaxation as the muscles tense and relax. transient ischemic attack (TIA) – A clot temporarily lodged in an artery of the brain before dissolving in the blood stream and producing the same signs and symptoms of a stroke (non-permanent). triangle bandage – One of the most common first aid bandages, usually of cotton or linen. Improvised easily from almost any material, folding options allow for multiple uses. tubular sling – A very secure and compact sling that helps immobilize as well as support an injury. tunnel effect – A condition that causes a person to focus on one thing to the exclusion of all others. umbilical cord – A tube that carries blood from the placenta to the fetus.
