Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual

2 PREmergency Scene Management

The scene assessment includes four parts.

d

1. Scene Safety 2. Mechanism of Injury/Nature of Illness 3. Personal Precautions (P.P.E.)

First Aider in Action: Part 1 You are walking down the street with a friend when you see a group of children, many of them on bikes, gathered around the base of a large tree. As you approach the group you see a man laying on the ground, holding his ankle and grimacing. Some of the children appear very agitated with several close to tears. 1. What are the parts of PREmergency Scene Management?

4. Determining Number of Patients (triage?) As you approach the scene, your first concern is safety for yourself and then safety for your patient. The emergency scene is not a controlled or predictable environment. What may seem secure may turn dangerous without warning and any scene may have the potential for injury. Remember: if you or other first aiders become hurt or incapacitated, then you take away the initial care the patient needs. Look for hazards or dangers as you approach. Walk, never run, towards an accident. Hazards come in many forms and include surface conditions such as ice or puddles of water/liquid that could cause a slip/fall injury.
