2 PREmergency Scene Management

PREMERGENCY SCENE MANAGEMENT Scene Assessment/Scene Safety • Consider activating 911 • Identify yourself and take control of the scene Mechanism of Injury/Nature of Illness

Scene Assessment When you see or first become alerted to an emergency, you need to begin with the Scene Assessment. This often starts with the first piece of information you have regarding the emergency. It may be a personally observed incident or information of an incident conveyed to you by others. The scene assessment is the first of many opportunities to activate 911. From this point on, you should activate 911, send for medical help, get a first aid kit and AED any time you identify a need. Identify yourself as a trained first aider to those at the scene. If no one is in charge, then take charge and identify people that may be able to help. Remember, an emergency scene can be a confusing place for many people. Ask for help. Some individuals may want to help but need to be told what to do.
