2 PREmergency Scene Management
Level of Consciousness (LOC) LOC, covered in the Primary Assessment, is assessed again using the same criteria as before but in more detail. Note any changes in the patient’s condition from the primary assessment. To test for LOC and responsiveness in a patient, Premergency first aiders use the AVPU scale and a series of questions to determine the patients LOC. AVPU is an mnemonic that stands for: Alert – The patient’s eyes open spontaneously. Patient appears to be aware and responsive to the environment, follows commands, and tracks objects and people with sight and sound. Verbal – Responds to verbal stimuli. The patient’s eyes do not open spontaneously but do open to verbal stimuli.
Physical – Responds to physical stimuli. The patient does not respond to your questions or direction but moves or cries out in response to physical stimuli. Only use approved methods of physical stimuli (see image below)
