Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual
2 PREmergency Scene Management
A patient who does not know the answers to any of these questions is said to be confused or disoriented. A patient that does not respond is said to have no response. Best motor response is determined by asking the patient to move various limbs or parts of their body. A patient who can do so is described as moves to command. If a patient does not respond to commands but does respond to touch, then the patient is described as moves to physical stimuli. Only use approved methods of physical stimuli. A patient that does not respond to physical stimuli is said to have no response. Once you have a result from one category, you move to the next. A patient with an altered LOC or a continued deficit in any one category is a true medical emergency. Send for additional medical help or activate 911 immediately.
Certain injuries may prevent an otherwise alert and aware patient from responding normally to AVPU
