SKILL
gently tap the shoulder
gently tap both shoulders
gently squeeze finger
Methods of Physical Stimuli Remember that you are here to provide care to your patient. While the need to elicit a response is real, you do not want to cause further harm. Begin by lightly tapping the patient on the shoulder while telling them to open their eyes. If no response, then firmly tap the patient on both shoulders, loudly telling them to open their eyes. When testing for motor response, gently but firmly squeeze the patient’s shoulder muscle or finger. Squeezing the fingers and toes is not recommended for infants or young children due to the risk of causing injury.
