Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual

2 PREmergency Scene Management

Reassess – Check any aid you provided or are providing to ensure effectiveness. Provide corrective measures for any deficiencies found. Protect – Maintain scene control and safety. Provide cover from the elements for your patient and support their injuries. Remember that injured and ill patients are at greater risk of heat loss.

Follow the proper procedures for lifting and moving patients (See Chapter 10 – Lifting and Moving). The components of Ongoing Care are based on continued control of the scene and the monitoring of the patient with reassessment of any care you have provided or are providing. During ongoing care you will monitor vital signs, reassess and protect the patient. Monitor Vital Signs – Obtain a full set of vital signs. For seriously ill or injured patients, you should obtain a set of vital signs at least every 5 minutes. For stable patients you should obtain a set of vital signs at least every ten minutes. Record vital signs and the time they are obtained. Observe any trends in improvement or decline and provide aid as needed.
