Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual
2 PREmergency Scene Management
The paramedics apply a cervical collar and perform a secondary scan before applying a splint to Dylan’s lower leg and foot. The paramedics roll Dylan and place him on a backboard. You watch as they swiftly secure Dylan to the backboard and then the stretcher before moving him to the ambulance. One of the paramedics climbs in the back with Dylan while the other thanks you and your friend for your help. You see the first paramedic in the back has already started taking Dylan’s vital signs again, writing them on a form. You can also see the paper with the vital signs you took clipped to the form. The ambulance pulls away and the children disperse. You and your friend continue on your way. As you walk down the street you talk about what you experienced. Why did the paramedics do a secondary assessment before transporting Dylan?
