2 PREmergency Scene Management
First Aider in Action: Part 5 With the ambulance arriving shortly, you decide the best course of action is to maintain c-spine precautions and support Dylan’s injured ankle while continuing to assess LOC, ABCs, and other vital signs. Dylan remains alert and oriented. His breathing is now 14 respirations per minute, regular and of normal depth, and his pulse is now 78, strong and steady. Just as you finish recording the second set of vital signs, the ambulance arrives and two paramedics approach the scene. Identifying yourself, you introduce the paramedics to Dylan, saying “This is Dylan, he’s a 32 year old male who fell about 12 feet from this tree, landing on his feet. His only complaint is his left ankle, which is tender and swollen. But given the MOI, we took c-spine precautions. His LOC and ABCs have been stable and we took two sets of vital signs.”
As you hand the record of vital signs to one paramedic, the other begins unpacking gear. The first paramedic introduces herself and her partner and asks your friend to continue providing c-spine protection. She then confirms with Dylan his chief complaint and method of injury. You realize she is also confirming Dylan’s LOC and ABC’s just like you did and also notice that she takes time to get consent from Dylan before quickly obtaining his SAMPLE. The paramedic tells Dylan that they need to transport him to hospital, and he agrees. Confirming the need for continued c-spine protection the second paramedic takes over from your friend.
