Choking – Special Populations First aid for choking requires different techniques for infants, those in a wheelchair, or someone much larger or smaller than you. The first aid sequence for choking always remains the same. Scene assessment and safety, the identification of choking, and back blows and thrusts until the obstruction is cleared or until the patient becomes unconscious and CPR begins. Large Person Choking Abdominal thrusts may not work on a patient much larger than you or a woman in the late stages of pregnancy. Use chest thrusts for these patients. Chest Thrust Stand behind the patient and put your arms around their chest, high under their arms.

• Monitor ABC’s • Be alert for inadequate breathing • Keep patient at rest until breathing returns to normal

Unconscious Patient after First Aid Success

• Monitor ABC’s • Recovery Position • Activate 911, get help
