Chemicals in the eye Immediately begin flushing with cool tap water. Turn the patient’s head so the injured eye is lower and to the side. Hold the eyelid open and flush from the inside corner to the outside to prevent cross contamination. Flood continuously with running water for 15 minutes. If both eyes or other parts of the body are contaminated, have the patient shower or use a hose if available. Remove any contact lenses that remain after flushing. Continue to flush the eye while seeking immediate medical help.
Blows, scratches and cuts to the eye • Do not use pressure to control bleeding. Lightly apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and control bleeding or if unavailable, a regular dressing. • If blood is collecting in the eye, cover with a dressing and bandage both eyes. • Get medical help immediately. Cut to the eyelid • If bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a dressing until stopped, rinse eye with water and dry. • Cover with a clean, dry dressing. A cold compress over the dressing will reduce pain and swelling. • Get medical help immediately.
A scratchy feeling or other minor discomfort may continue after removing a small object from the eye. This can last for 1 or 2 days. Seek medical help for continued discomfort or blurred vision.
