7 Bleeding, Wound Care and Trauma
Slings Slings are used to support wounds to the lower arm and hand. Slings are also used in bone and joint injury (See Chapter 8, Muscle, bone, and joint injury). Support the injured arm across the chest with the fingers pointing at the opposite shoulder. 1. Using an open triangle bandage, slide the broad point under the injured arm with a long narrow end over the opposite shoulder. 2. Bring the other long end up over the arm and behind the neck. Tie the two ends together with a reef knot. Pad under the knot if possible. 3. Wrap the broad end around the elbow and pin it in place or tuck it into the sling.
