7 Bleeding, Wound Care and Trauma
Vital Vocabulary abrasion (scrape) – An open wound where the outer layer of skin has been scraped away but deeper layers are intact. allergic reaction – When a patient’s immune system reacts to a substance. amputation – The partial or complete severing of a body part. avulsion – A type of wound where a flap of skin and tissue is partially or completely torn away from the body. bandage – Used to hold a dressing in place, keep pressure on a wound, support or immobilize a joint or limb, and provide padding around an injury. burn – Occurs when the body or a body part receives more radiant energy then it can absorb.
chemical burn – Can occur any time a toxic substance comes in contact with the body.
closed injury – Can be small contusions, bumps, and/ or bruises. More extensive closed injuries can have significant swelling and bleeding under the skin. clotting process – When blood is exposed to air or trauma, it begins to thicken and harden. compression – Mild pressure a first aider applies over an injury to slow bleeding and decrease swelling. contact burn – Occurs when a person touches something hot. contusion (bruise) – A closed wound, usually caused by blunt trauma. This damage causes bleeding into the surrounding tissue, causing discolouration and swelling.
