7 Bleeding, Wound Care and Trauma

external bleeding – The loss of blood from the body’s blood vessels outside of the body. flash burn – Produced when an explosion or lightning briefly exposes the patient to very high heat. full thickness burn (3rd degree) – Affects the entire thickness of the epidermis and dermis. May also affect tissue below the skin, in the subcutaneous layer, such as muscle, bone, and internal organs. gauze dressing – A sterile, absorbent and lint-free cloth dressing. Available in many sizes and different thicknesses, gauze dressings are used on all wound types. incision – Uniform, even cuts in the skin and tissue. inhalation Injury – Injury from breathing superheated air or gases.

cornea – The transparent tissue at the front of the eye. crush Injury – When a part of the patient’s body is crushed under a heavy object. dermis – The lower layers of skin. dressing – Used directly on a wound to control bleeding, absorb blood, and cover and protect a wound. elastic bandage – Used to support an injury or to provide even pressure on a dressing to control bleeding. electrical burn – Occurs when a patient comes in contact with either high or low voltage electricity. embedded object – An object that is stuck into a wound. epidermis – The top layers of skin.
