7 Bleeding, Wound Care and Trauma
internal bleeding – The loss of blood from the body’s blood vessels into the surrounding tissue or body cavities. laceration – Tears in the skin and tissue. These wounds are not cut by sharp thin objects like incisions but are torn open instead. The edges of the wound are jagged and irregular. occlusive dressing – A dressing that is airtight. open injury – When there is a break in the patient’s body tissue. partial thickness burn (2nd degree) – Affects the epidermis and some part of the lower layers, the dermis. penetrating chest wound – When a puncture injury penetrates into the chest cavity.
pneumothorax – When air enters through a wound and into the chest cavity during inhalation. pressure dressings – A sterile, thick, and highly absorbent dressing. Most often packaged with a cloth or elastic bandage attached. primary blast – The direct effect of a pressure wave on the body. puncture wound – Caused by objects that penetrate the skin. R.I.C.E. – A mnemonic to remember how to treat soft tissue injuries: rest, ice, compression, elevation. radiation burn – Caused by energy radiating from a source that can damage the skin and eyes. rest – Keep the patient as quiet and comfortable as possible.
