roller bandage – A cloth bandage available in many widths and thicknesses used to secure a dressing in place. Ends can be tied or secured with adhesive tape. rule of nines – A measurement technique to determine the extent of a burn in which the body is divided into sections each roughly equal to 9% of the total body surface area (BSA). rule of palm – A measurement technique to determine the extent of a burn using the patient palm size (excluding the fingers). The palm is approximately 1% of the body surface. scald burn – Produced by hot liquids. secondary blast – Being struck by objects propelled by the blast force such as metal, glass, or masonry.

severe allergic reaction – When a patient’s immune system reacts negatively to a substance causing swelling of the mouth, throat, airway, and/or any difficulty breathing. sling – Used to support the lower arm and hand if wounded. Slings can also be used for bone or joint injuries. steam burn – Can create a scald burn. Minor steam burns are common in cooking. Steam (any hot gas) can cause severe airway burns. superficial burn (1st degree) – Affects only the top layers of the skin (the epidermis). tension pneumothorax – When air displaces and compresses the lungs and heart in the chest cavity, leading to death
