8 Muscle, Bone and Joint Injuries

Tibia and Fibula (Lower Leg) Fractures The two bones of the lower leg are the tibia, the thicker bone on the inside centre of the leg, and the fibula, the thinner outside bone. Fractures to the lower leg can be common in sports and recreation. As with all bones, the fracture can occur anywhere on the surface of the bone. It may be open or it can be closed with little or no deformity. Expose any areas of DOTS. Dress any open wounds, tenting over any exposed bone ends. Pad any deformity or exposed bone ends to protect and stabilize them. Bandage dressings and any padding in place, avoiding pressure directly over the injury. Splint the injury and provide ongoing care.
