First Aid Splinting a Lower Leg Fracture

• Check perfusion below the injury frequently. Adjust bandages and splints as necessary.

• Steady and support the injured leg. • Expose the injury. Dress, pad, and bandage any open fractures. • If medical help will be delayed or you need to prepare the patient for transport, you will need to splint the leg. • Assess and gather available splinting material and decide on the type of splint. • Pad the splints and position them. • Carefully support the leg above and below the injury as you bandage the splints in place. Do not bandage directly over the injury.
