Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual
8 Muscle, Bone and Joint Injuries
Ankle and Foot Splints Immobilize an ankle or foot if you suspect a sprain, fracture, or muscle tissue injury. More serious injury, such as an open fracture, should be immobilized the same as a lower leg fracture. For less serious injury, use of a blanket or pillow splint is appropriate if the injury can be supported without excessive movement.
First Aid Splinting an Ankle or Foot injury
• Steady and support the injured leg. • Expose the injury. Dress, pad, and bandage any open fractures. • If medical help will be delayed or you need to prepare the patient for transport, you will need to splint the ankle. • Splint the ankle as a lower leg fracture or, for less serious injury, as shown. • Check perfusion below the injury frequently. Adjust bandages and splints as necessary.
