Collarbone and Shoulder Blade Injury The clavicle (collarbone) and the scapula (shoulder blade) form the structure of the shoulder and support the arm. A fracture to the collarbone or the shoulder blade can be caused either directly from a blow or indirectly, such as when force travels up the arm from a fall onto an outstretched hand. Of the two, the collarbone is less able to withstand force and is a more common injury. A fall or direct blow are not the only MOI that can cause a collarbone fracture. In a sudden deceleration injury, such as a vehicle accident or contact sport may put enough force on the collarbone to cause injury.
