8 Muscle, Bone and Joint Injuries
Upper Arm Fracture • Expose the injury. Dress any open wounds, tenting over and protruding bone ends. • Pad around any deformity or protruding bones. • Padding must be thick enough to protect any exposed bone ends. • Bandage padding and dressing in place. Avoid pressure on broken bone ends. Do not bandage directly over the injury site. • Immobilize the arm with a sling as per a shoulder blade injury. Pad under the elbow for position of comfort. • Secure the sling to the body with broad bandages above and below the fracture site. • Check perfusion below the injury frequently.
