8 Muscle, Bone and Joint Injuries

Splinting a Lower Arm or Wrist • Expose the injury. Dress, pad, and bandage any open fractures. • Use a commercial or improvised splint: 1. A malleable commercial splint with foam padding. 2. A newspaper with towel padding. 3. Cardboard with towel padding. 4. Secure the splint to the arm and hand with bandages. 5. Do not cross bandages directly over the injury site. • Sling the arm as a shoulder injury. • Check perfusion below the injury frequently. • Adjust bandages and sling as necessary.
