8 Muscle, Bone and Joint Injuries
Splinting a Hand or Thumb • Expose the injury. Dress, pad, and bandage any open fractures. 1. Use a rolled or wadded up bandage in the palm of the patient’s hand to support it in a natural position of comfort. 2. Use a commercial or improvised splint. • Secure the splint to the arm and hand with bandages. Do not cross bandages directly over the injury site. 3. Sling the arm as a shoulder injury. • Check perfusion below the injury frequently. Adjust bandages and sling as necessary.
