First Aider in Action: Summary 1. How does the body cool itself in a hot environment? The body has several mechanisms to cool itself. Dilating (making larger) the blood vessels at the skin surface helps radiate heat, and the production of sweat cools the body through evaporation. 2. What factors can impair the body’s ability to manage heat? Injury, illness, age, and physical condition all affect the body’s ability to tolerate and manage heat. 3. Is the scene safe? What is the method of injury nature of illness? The scene appears safe but you do not know the history of the incident yet.

There may be unseen dangers, and a reaction to pesticides or biting insects may have caused the patient to lose consciousness. 4. Can you rule out spinal injury? Why or why not? Until clarified, always assume the possibility of spinal injury. 5. Is the airway open and is breathing effective? Why or why not? You can hear a snoring noise. The airway is partially obstructed and this has a negative effect on breathing.
