9 Other Emergencies
Vital Vocabulary amnionic sac –A bag-like structure surrounding the fetus. The sac is full of amnionic fluid, a liquid that surrounds and protects the fetus. anxiety (panic) attack – a condition of indecision and fear caused when a person becomes overwhelmed by a situation. cervix –The entrance to the uterus which dilates (opens) to allow the fetus to be born. drug – Any substance, including alcohol, that causes an effect in the body. fetus – An unborn baby. frostbite – The actual freezing of tissue.
hysteria – Or histrionic disorder, a condition that causes general lack of self-control. labour – The stages of delivery that is childbirth. miscarriage – (spontaneous abortion) The birth of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy. placenta – An organ that develops inside the uterus with the fetus during pregnancy. The placenta supplies blood with nutrients and oxygen to the fetus from the mother. umbilical cord – A tube that carries blood from the placenta to the fetus. uterus – Also called the womb. The muscular structure where the baby develops from conception to birth. vagina – The muscular passage that the fetus passes through during birth.
