10 Lifting and Moving
Car accidents or other entrapment present additional concerns for the first aider due to the likelihood of head and spinal injury. If you are able, it is better to support the patient in the position found and provide first aid. If you need to move a patient from a car for safety reasons, you must maintain spinal motion restriction: • If a second person is available, have them steady and support the head and neck from behind. • Carefully untangle the patient’s feet from the pedals. • Undo the seatbelt. Be careful not to bump or jar the patient.
