Blanket stretcher A blanket stretcher is constructed with a blanket and two poles. • Place a blanket on the ground. Place a pole lengthwise on top, one third the width of the blanket. • Fold the one third part of the blanket over the poll. • Place a second pole on the blanket, approximately 15 cm (6 inches) in from the edge of the fold so that it rests on both layers of the blanket. • Fold the remaining edge over the second pole, bringing it to the opposite edge of the stretcher. • The weight of the patient should prevent the blankets from slipping on the poles. Monitor the blanket frequently and adjust as necessary.
• If a blanket is not available, you can still improvise a stretcher with poles and two or three shirts or jackets. • Button or zip the shirts or jackets. Pull the arms inside out so they run down inside the body. • Lay the shirts or jackets on the ground, one above the other. Slide the poles down the inside of the sleeves. • A third shirt or jacket can be used for taller patients. • If you are able, adding cross braces at the head and foot of the stretcher will provide better support for the patient and make carrying the stretcher easier.
