eye opening – A first aider can determine if a patient is awake and alert by checking their eye opening. burn – Produced when an explosion or lightning briefly exposes the patient to very high heat. FAST – Face is drooping; Arms can your raise both; Speech slurred; Time of onset and call 911 right away febrile seizures – Seizures that are caused by sudden high fever. These are most common in infants and children. fetus – An unborn baby. flail chest – When three or more adjacent ribs are broken at two or more points, causing that section to lose continuity with the rigid chest wall. fracture – Any break in the continuity of a bone. It can occur anywhere on the surface and in any pattern.
frostbite – The actual freezing of tissue. full thickness burn (3rd degree) – Affects the entire thickness of the epidermis and dermis. It may also affect tissue below the skin, in the subcutaneous layer, such as muscle, bone, and internal organs gauze dressing – A sterile, absorbent, and lint-free cloth dressing. Available in many sizes and different thicknesses, gauze dressings are used on all wound types. gloves – A barrier device to protect the first aider from blood or bodily fluids. hand-off – When the patient is given over to the next level of care. harm – Physical abuse (including sexual abuse), psychological abuse, financial abuse, or any combination thereof.
