head tilt/chin lift – A maneuver that moves the tongue away from the back of the throat and opens the airway. heat cramps – Painful muscle cramps that occur after vigorous exercise or strenuous labour. heat exhaustion – A condition caused by a decrease in blood volume as the result of loss of water and electrolytes through heavy sweating. heatstroke – A condition that occurs when the body becomes overwhelmed by a hot environment and can no longer get rid of the excess heat. Body temperature rises very quickly, up to 41°C (106°F) and tissue begins to be destroyed. hemorrhage – Bleeding. history – A step in the secondary assessment process that provides detail about a patient’s chief complaint, signs, and symptoms.

hyperventilation – A condition of breathing too fast that prevents proper oxygen exchange. hypoglycemia – When the amount of glucose in the blood falls below the body’s requirements. hyperthermia – A heat injury where the body’s core temperature reaches or rises above 38.3°C (101°F). hypothermia – A cold injury where the core temperature falls below 35°C and progressive loss of body heat begins. hysteria – Or histrionic disorder, a condition that causes general lack of self control. implied consent – The idea that a seriously injured or ill person that was unable to ask for help would still want to be helped. Minors (children less than 18 years old) can give consent or implied consent in the absence of a parent or guardian.
