Nature of Illness (NOI) – A sickness or medical condition that damages or hurts the body that is not caused by external physical force. This is generally found in medical patients. neglect – When the basic provisions for life are not provided for. negligence – If a first aider does something knowingly against the patient’s interest. noisy breathing – When a patient presents with snoring, bubbling, gurgling, whistling/crowing, and/or any other abnormal breathing sounds. occlusive dressing – A dressing that is airtight. olfactory distortion – An increased sensitivity to recognizing odors.

ongoing care / transport – The stage of PSM that you monitor patient vital signs and assess interventions. open injury – When there is a break in the patient’s body tissue. open wound – An injury that has caused any break in the skin. palpate – Examining by touch. paradoxical movement – When the patient exhales and the chest wall contracts, the flail section pushes out, which causes a bulge over the injury. partial thickness burn (2nd degree) – Affects the epidermis and some part of the lower layers (the dermis). past history – Refers to pertinent history of medical, surgical or trauma events.
