2 PREmergency Scene Management

Be aware of cross contamination and do not treat multiple patients with the same barrier devices. Determine the Number of Patients It is essential to determine the number of patients in the Scene Survey, as you need to quickly assess the need for additional resources. Activating 911 when needed, whether for additional medical help, fire services, or law enforcement is best done as soon as possible. If there are multiple patients, then you will need to determine care based on priority (See Multiple Patients and Triage–pg. 33). Delegating tasks to people at the scene is wise and effective PREmergency Scene Management. Identifying people to activate 911, provide crowd control, or record vital signs allows you to concentrate on other things.

First Aider in Action: Part 2 You and your friend arrive at the scene. One of the children says that the man, Dylan, was climbing a tree and fell. You identify yourself as a first aider and ask the children to give you space. You check if anyone has activated 911. No one has. You also check to see if anyone else is hurt but there is just the single patient. As the children make room you quickly scan the ground for hazards and then kneel next to Dylan who responds to your greeting. Is Dylan a Trauma or Medical patient and what is the probable MOI/NOI? Are spinal precautions needed? Why or why not?
