The Recovery Position For the stable patient without spinal concerns, the recovery position protects the airway. 1. Start by extending the patient’s near arm above their head and bring their far hand to their near shoulder. 2. Elevate and flex the patient’s far knee while maintaining support of their head. 3. Carefully pull the patient’s elevated knee towards you with one hand while you support the patient’s head with the other hand. 4. As you roll the patient towards you, position their head on their hand/arm. Confirm the patient’s airway and adequacy of breathing. Continue to monitor the patient’s ABCs while waiting for help.
