2 PREmergency Scene Management
Secondary Assessment Examine and Care Continue to Monitor ABCs and treat life threats. The secondary assessment is used to gather additional information about the patient and their chief complaint or condition. Depending on the MOI/NOI, all or part of it may be unnecessary. If a secondary assessment is unnecessary, move to the Ongoing Care phase. The secondary assessment is done when: • The primary assessment is completed and treatment rendered • The patient is unconscious. • You have reason to suspect more than one injury. • Medical help is delayed more than 20 minutes. • Or you must transport the patient Let’s now look at the components of the secondary assessment. First, Patient History is discovered in as much detail as possible, gathered from the patient, family members, friends, bystanders, or other means (medical alert bracelet) information.
Log Roll (if you have more than 1 person to assist) 2nd person – Support the head and neck.
3rd person – Support the legs 4th person – Support the feet
