Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual

2 PREmergency Scene Management

Vital Signs include the patient’s Level of Consciousness (LOC), their breathing rate, heart rate, skin condition, and body temperature. Try to record this information and the time it was obtained. Secondary Scan is a complete head to toe exam using DOTS. It is slower and more thorough than the quick scan performed earlier and is focused on making sure nothing is missed. A secondary scan is where you will provide any care to additional injuries or illness found.

Patient History History taking provides further detail about the patient’s condition and chief complaint and helps to further investigate the possible causes and effects of the illness or injury. Remember to use family members, friends, bystanders, and medical identification tags to gain important information on the events leading up to the incident. Premergency first aiders use the acronym SAMPLE to list the questions they need to ask when taking a patient’s history.
