2 PREmergency Scene Management

Vital Vocabulary AVPU scale – A method of assessing the level of consciousness by determining whether the patient is awake and alert, responsive to verbal or physical stimuli, or unresponsive/unconscious. chief complaint – The reason the patient needs help. Also, the response by the patient to the question “What’s wrong?” DOTS – A mnemonic for assessing the body for deformities, open wounds, tenderness, and swelling. history taking – A step in the secondary assessment process that provides detail about a patient’s chief complaint, signs, and symptoms. MOI – Mechanism of Injury. The way a traumatic injury occurred and the forces that act on the body to cause damage.

NOI – Nature of Illness. The general type of illness a patient experiences. palpate – Examine by touch. perfusion – The circulation of blood within the body. P.P.E.- personal protective equipment PSM – PREmergency Scene Management primary assessment – A step in PSM that identifies and treats life threats to the patient. pulse – The pressure wave felt in a patient’s arteries each time the heart beats. reassessment – A step performed at regular intervals during the assessment process. Its purpose is to identify and treat changes in the patient’s condition.
